Chapparo Zine: A tale of Southern Californian Wildlife (DES 016 W24)
For my zine topic, I wanted to showcase the native wildlife and environment
of Central Southern California and the conflict that it's confronted with human development. Or as many people know it, the chaparral. Despite what much of the general public believes, the chaparral is filled with life and a specialized ecosystem. It is also a biome that is only found in California, Southern Oregon, Mexico and other western US states. Chaparrals are characterized by a Mediterranean climate, fires, shrubby plants, and different types of grasses.

There is a common misconception that the Chaparral is a desert, devoid of life and having low diversity in flora and fauna. However, that is not the case and the chaparral is home to many iconic western animals like the Mule deer, black bears, kit foxes, red-tailed hawk, Costa's hummingbird and so many more. The chaparral is also integral to many species endemic to California like the California Quail, Blue Azure butterfly, Wrentit, and the California Slender Salamander. All of this wildlife depends on the Californian chaparral for their habitat and survival. However, with the increasing population and urbanization in California, more and more of these species are threatened because of loss in their habitat.
